Across the border, into the Serengeti
The Mara and the Serengeti are one ecosystem with a line drawn through them. These itineraries treat them that way.
The Maasai Mara is the northern tip of the Serengeti ecosystem. The wildebeest that cross the Mara River in August spent February calving on the short-grass plains near Ndutu, four hundred kilometres south. Seeing only one half of that system is like reading half a book.
These itineraries link the two. You cross at Isebania or Namanga, we handle the paperwork, and you carry on game driving on the other side. Depending on the season and your budget we will either drive the whole route or fly the longest legs, which buys back most of a day.
The Ngorongoro Crater is on every one of them, and rightly so — a collapsed caldera twenty kilometres across, with its own resident population of lion, elephant, hippo, flamingo and one of the last reliable places on the continent to see black rhino from a vehicle.
Practicalities
- You need a visa for each country. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda but not Tanzania.
- Tanzanian park fees are notably higher than Kenyan ones — this is the main reason cross-border trips cost more per day.
- We handle both border crossings; expect them to take between forty minutes and two hours.
- Yellow fever certificates are checked when entering Tanzania from Kenya.
Following the herds
- December–March: calving on the southern Serengeti plains around Ndutu.
- April–May: the herds move north-west; the long rains make tracks difficult.
- May–June: the Grumeti river crossings in the western corridor.
- July–October: the Mara River crossings, on both sides of the border.
