North of Mount Kenya the country turns to red earth, doum palm and thorn scrub, and the wildlife changes with it. Samburu holds five species you will not find in the Mara — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and the Somali ostrich — all along the green thread of the Ewaso Nyiro river.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi → Samburu

    North through Thika and Nanyuki, crossing the equator at Nanyuki with Mount Kenya on your right. The road drops down into dry country and you reach the reserve in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive along the river.

  2. Day 2

    Samburu

    Morning and afternoon game drives, working both banks of the Ewaso Nyiro. Mornings are for cats and for the game coming down to drink; afternoons for the dry scrub where gerenuk browse standing on their hind legs. A visit to a Samburu manyatta can be added.

  3. Day 3

    Samburu → Nairobi

    A last game drive at first light, then breakfast and the road south past Mount Kenya, arriving in Nairobi in the afternoon.
