Eight days is enough to see how varied Kenya really is. You sleep in montane forest on the slopes of Mount Kenya, cross into the dry north at Samburu, drop to the freshwater birding lakes of Baringo and Nakuru, and finish on the Mara's grassland.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi → Mount Kenya forest lodge

    North to the Mount Kenya forest belt. Afternoon at the lodge watching the waterhole, with elephant, buffalo and bushbuck arriving through the evening.

  2. Day 2

    Mount Kenya → Samburu

    Down the mountain, across the equator at Nanyuki and north into dry country. Afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro.

  3. Day 3

    Samburu

    A full day of game drives for Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, oryx and leopard.

  4. Day 4

    Samburu → Lake Baringo

    West across the Laikipia plateau to Baringo. Afternoon boat trip for hippo, crocodile, fish eagle and the cliff-nesting birds of the escarpment.

  5. Day 5

    Lake Baringo → Lake Nakuru

    A morning walk or second boat trip, then south to Nakuru. Afternoon game drive in the national park.

    Lake Nakuru → Maasai Mara

    Morning drive for rhino, then cross-country to the Mara. Evening game drive on arrival.

    A full day in the reserve with a picnic lunch, ranging as far as the Mara River.
