This pairs the Mara's open grassland with the very different world of Lake Nakuru — an alkaline lake ringed by yellow-barked acacia and fenced as a rhino sanctuary. Between the two parks you have a fair chance of all of the Big Five inside four days.

Day 1
Nairobi → Maasai Mara
Morning departure from Nairobi via the Rift Valley escarpment and Narok. You arrive at your camp in time for lunch, rest through the heat, and head out for an evening game drive as the light softens.

Day 2
Maasai Mara
A full day in the reserve. Morning and late-afternoon drives, or one long day out with a picnic lunch towards the Mara River. Your guide will follow the cats — the Mara's lion density is among the highest anywhere in Africa, and cheetah hunt the short-grass plains through the middle of the day.

Day 3
Maasai Mara → Lake Nakuru
A short game drive after breakfast, then north through Narok and up the Rift Valley floor to Nakuru, arriving for lunch. The afternoon is spent inside the park: the lakeshore for waterbirds, the acacia woodland for rhino and buffalo, and Baboon Cliff for the view back down over the water.

Day 4
Lake Nakuru → Nairobi
One more circuit of the park after breakfast, looking for the leopard that use the fever trees near the lake, then out through the main gate and south to Nairobi. Arrival early to mid-afternoon.
