If you have a week, this is the itinerary we suggest most often. Amboseli for elephant and Kilimanjaro, Lake Nakuru for rhino and birdlife, and two nights in the Maasai Mara for everything else. Nothing is rushed and every long drive is broken by something worth stopping for.

Day by day

Day 1
Nairobi → Amboseli
South from Nairobi on the Mombasa road, then west from Emali to Amboseli. Lunch at the lodge and an afternoon drive around the swamps.

Day 2
Amboseli
A full day in the park. Early start for the mountain, morning with the elephant herds, and an afternoon that ends on Observation Hill.

Day 3
Amboseli → Lake Naivasha or Nakuru
A long transfer day, but a good one — back past Nairobi, up the escarpment and down into the Rift Valley with Mount Longonot on your right. Lunch en route and an afternoon arrival, with time for an optional boat ride on Lake Naivasha if you are staying there.

Day 4
Lake Nakuru → Maasai Mara
A morning game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park for rhino, Rothschild's giraffe and the lakeshore birds, then the cross-country drive south to the Mara. Evening game drive on arrival.

Day 5
Maasai Mara
A full day in the reserve, morning and afternoon or one long day out with a picnic lunch at the Mara River. Balloon flights and Maasai village visits can be booked here.

Day 6
Maasai Mara → Nairobi
Sunrise game drive, breakfast, and the drive back to Nairobi via Narok, arriving mid to late afternoon.
