Amboseli is the park people picture when they picture Africa: a dry lake bed, dust, and elephant families crossing in front of Kilimanjaro. It has some of the largest tuskers left on the continent, and because the plains are open you see them from a long way off.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi → Amboseli

    We leave Nairobi mid-morning and take the Mombasa road south, turning off at Emali towards the Tanzanian border. Lunch at your lodge in Amboseli, then out on an afternoon game drive around the swamps where the elephants feed and the buffalo wallow.

  2. Day 2

    Amboseli

    A pre-dawn start, because Kilimanjaro is usually clear for the first hour of light and clouds over by mid-morning. Back for breakfast, then either a rest through the heat or a full day out with a picnic. In the afternoon we climb Observation Hill for the view across the swamps, and finish on the plains as the light goes gold.

  3. Day 3

    Amboseli → Nairobi

    A last morning game drive with the mountain behind you, breakfast at the lodge, then the drive north to Nairobi, arriving early afternoon.
